With past presidents America citizens haven’t viewed presidents as sex symbols by looking at a magazine picture of him with his shirt off. The Washingtonian Magazine issue for May is featuring Barrack Obama shirtless in a bathing suit. Do you think this is appropriate?
Barrack Obama is like any other guy, besides he has people following him around and watching his every move. Obama is just a normal guy who, likes to stay fit and health and runs the United States of America.
Washingtonian Magazine is just trying to prove a point that America is trying to become a healthy and fit country. With I head guy being in shape, it makes everyone in America want to do the same. Being healthy helps with making yourself feel good about your body as well as being like Barrack Obama and being able to feel comfortable in a swimming suit.
Washingtonian Magazine is like any other magazine that is trying to grab the audience’s eyes by having covers that grasp your eyes. Since Obama is the President, people want to read more about the magazine when they see him on it (especially if he has his shirt off). Cosmopolitan magazine tries to grab reader’s attention by putting famous actresses on it. People that read Cosmopolitan like to know about what their favorite celebrities are up to. Sports Illustrated magazine covers grab their audience’s attention by putting famous sports stars onto the cover or showing dramatic events that occurred with sports.
All magazines have some way in which they are trying to attract their reader’s attention by just looking at the cover. The saying “don’t judge a book by its cover” is something everyone should go by, but not everyone does. This is why the cover is important to magazine covers. People see a covers that pop out to them, which leads them to reading the magazine even though the inside of the magazine might not be as great as how it looks on the outside. When you pick up a magazine next time, think about why you choose to read that particular one.

Very interesting post I would have to say, it brings a lot of questions up and many different opinions. I do not think it is right to look at Obama as a sex symbol, because he is our President. The cover does grab people's attention and would make them want to read the magazine and that is just what this picture does. It is nice to know that we have a president that cares about his health and probably would like others in his country to do the same; that's what a good rolemodel does.
ReplyDeleteGreat post Barclay. I had actually heard about this on TV and they were making a big deal about it. Professionals had analyzed the cover and what they found was actually pretty shocking yet somehow entertaining. The picture was actually cropped from a previous one taken at the beach. They had augmented his skin color to make him look darker and even increased the size of his muscles to make him look more muscular than what he actually is. I was a little freaked out to see that our President could be considered a "sex symbol", but I guess anything is possible in America!
ReplyDeleteNice post! It was really interesting and made me think a little bit. I really don't think Obama being used as a sex symbol is very appropriate. He is the head of our country, and should be shown with a little bit more dignity. On the other hand though, showing him being physically fit, could influence the people of our country to start getting in shape being the head of our country is in great shape. And it is true that magazine covers draw us in. They are always appealing to the eye and always seem to catch my attention and I will usually buy Cosmopolitan magazines because of that. Haha
ReplyDeleteWould you consider your boss as a sex symbol?? haha Probably not. Thinking of President Obama as boss of our country but this issue into prospective for me. On the other side of the debate today anything can happen. And picturing of the President of the United States as a sex symbol is very very funny if you think about it. And yes im sure that this article got many veiwers attention!!
ReplyDeleteI think that as the President of our country, Obama should be shown with more dignity. Just because he's physically fit doesn't mean he has to be shown with his shirt off on a magazine to prove it. And if he wants to promote a healthy lifestyle, he has the power to pass and ban laws (relating to health) with the House and Senate.
ReplyDeleteYes, I buy magazines with certain celebs to read about them, and if I were interested in Obama, I'd buy magazines with him on the cover. But I don't think the Washingtonian should have to feature our President as a sex symbol just to sell their magazine.
